In an ever widening knowledge gap in cross-regional public schooling, there remain few elements in which one could expect all children to be exposed to.  One subject matter that has an easy entry point are the food groups.  The food pyramid (and later the food plate) are simply understood graphics that represent a basic public good—dietary balance.  Like food, we believe that good architectural environments are brought about by a healthy mix of variety, and as such, comparing basic architectural features (such as form, style, program, and zoning) to food groups is a natural way to make difficult architectural concepts more accessible to a young audience.

Like a healthy diet that all people should strive to maintain, The Healthy City is comprised of a variety of architectural features each parceled out in a highly controlled manner.  There are numerous comparisons that can be drawn between the topics of food and architecture, such as the way both are made up of smaller elements (seasonings and buildings) that contribute to a larger result (meals and districts).

This block on the Southside of Chicago in the Bronzeville neighborhood consists mainly of residential type buildings with some scattered commercial properties.  It is inside a T4 transect zone, the general urban zone.  As such, the blocks within the district do not currently maintain a healthy balance of building types, through neither form nor program.  This is caused by the self-similar block makeup repeated throughout the area.

The current state of the block as seen in this section of Bronzeville contains over 2000 residents with plenty more residents nearby in adjacent blocks.  Because of the growing population for the area, as well as an available abundance of open land between buildings, there exists an opportunity to develop more commercial type buildings and rebalance the district between residential and commerce.
